London-based business-niche publisher Campden Media has acquired the Institute for Private Investors in a bid to reach more ultra-high-net-worth families in the U.S. and improve its online networking capabilities.

Financial terms of transaction weren't disclosed.

The IPI, a New York-based networking and education resource for 1,100 families with at least $50 million in total assets, will keep its name and operate as part of Campden's wealthmanagement business line. Mindy Rosenthal, Campden's managing director for North America, will take on additional responsibilities from the IPI's Kristi Kuechler, who has resigned as president and left the company.

Charlotte Beyer, who founded the IPI in 1991, will stay on as its chief executive for the foreseeable future. "I'm more than re-energized [by the merger with Campden]: I've become doubly passionate about our mission," she says.

Campden's wealth-management business publishes news and hosts invitation-only conferences for high-wealth families and their advisers--primarily in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The tiein with the IPI adds about 1,100 wealth-holder members to the 2,200 or so ultra-high-net-worth families that attend Campden's high-wealth and family-business conferences yearly. Altogether these families are worth around $200 billion, according to Campden.

In addition to adding U.S. families, the acquisition gives Campden customers access to the IPI's Memberlink, a website that features proprietary research and a discussion board IPI members use to vet investment products, compare asset management fees and conduct other wealthservice due diligence. These discussions provide a degree of transparency in an otherwise opaque segment of the financial-service industry, says wealth-industry consultant Jane Abitanta.

More than that, notes Campden CEO John Pettifor: Memberlink gives his company a chance to turn customers into members. "We've been looking to create such a platform for three or four years now," he says.

In addition to its wealth-management business, Campden is an information-service provider to the European healthcare industry.
