In Europe, celebrating corporate success might not flow as easily these days as it did before the financial and euro crises. The worst aspects of these crises might be over, but there is still precious little economic growth in the region for corporations to flourish on – even the German economy shows signs of slowing.

So optimism, where it exists, should be celebrated and encouraged. This edition of CampdenFB attempts to do so by commemorating the success and durability of family businesses with its annual European Families in Business Awards. Now in its second year, CampdenFB’s awards, in association with Societe Generale Private Banking, are designed to recognise the truly great family businesses in Europe and their leaders.

This year, apart from the five regular awards – top family business; top family business leader; top rising star; top non-family chief executive; and top sustainable family business – we have also introduced a lifetime achievement award. CampdenFB 58 has all the shortlisted candidates and more about the awards.

Beyond the buzz around our awards, this edition also includes a number of big profiles, including an exclusive interview with Mishal Kanoo, a scion of one of the Middle East’s best-known business families. Kanoo talks openly about the big family-controlled conglomerate – operating in diverse sectors including logistics, construction and real estate – and the challenges it faces in the years ahead. A profile on Aspall, a British family cider-making business, is also featured, with an interview with the eighth-generation brothers running the firm.

Space tourism is poised to blast off within a year as Virgin Galactic begins commercial flights. Other space tourism initiatives are being launched ensuring that the next big tourist adventure will be outer space. Find out more in this quarter’s Enjoy Your Wealth section.
